Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Ace Leaves His Ego Outside.

One snub did the trick. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to understand that securing World Cup glory demands help from the talented midfielder, even if it is also Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies required with England now that he is back in the manager's supportive environment.

Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is a matter of harnessing it appropriately. Skill counts but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a price to pay when fame dominates. Still, a statement has been delivered.

The midfielder was given food for thought after his omission of the previous squad. He observed the national side qualify at the tournament without him. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a counterpressing No 10. He listened as the coach mention valuing the group’s energy and principles. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in winning fashion, netting important strikes for his club versus their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have made his squad place in serious doubt.

The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that his period on the sidelines has shown him that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after showing that he is willing to drop big names.

“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German commented. “Bellingham possesses a competitive streak. You need a certain edge to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone need to help him and build an environment which he can use this edge in matches and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”

Bellingham dominated the spotlight at the team news conference for the upcoming final group games versus one opponent and Albania. Any other news? Well, what about another talent? This is another prodigious playmaker in need of coaching. He has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after his performance in Manchester City’s win versus Borussia Dortmund this week.

The question, however, is how to use the various creators at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to select Cole Palmer once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Is selecting five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping the captain's game in the process.

It is hard to see Tuchel repeating that if it disrupts the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who must play central. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea about him for a long time. I think it suits him best.”

Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the environment, it's unclear.

“In my opinion he is also so used to representing his club in a particular setup, to have a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clarity. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?

Tuchel talked about Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and Foden netting strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest abounds.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, he suggested deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to foster the understanding with Bellingham going. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting the captain to net in a friendly win against the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.

“This is where eventually it falls to the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of the player having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to begin versus Serbia and Albania. The manager wants Bellingham onside but he will be observing him closely. Set aside the ego outside. It will make a very strong squad into an more effective one.
