The Reasons Top Executives Prefer US Multi-Club 'Speedboat' Instead of FA Slow-Moving Structures?
On Wednesday, the Bay Collective group disclosed the recruitment of Van Ginhoven, the English national team's managerial lead working with Sarina Wiegman, taking on the role of overseer of worldwide women's football activities. The freshly established collective club ownership initiative, featuring Bay FC of San Francisco as the initial addition within its group, has prior experience in hiring individuals from the English FA.
The appointment in recent months of Kay Cossington, the prominent ex-technical director for the FA, as the chief executive was a signal of intent from this organization. Cossington understands the women's game comprehensively and now she has assembled a leadership team that possesses extensive knowledge of the evolution of the women's game and filled with practical experience.
She marks the third core member of Wiegmanâs setup to leave in the current year, with the chief executive exiting prior to the European Championships and deputy manager, Arjan Veurink, moving on to become head coach of the Dutch national team, however Van Ginhoven's choice was made earlier.
Moving on was a surprising shift, but âIâd taken my decision to exit the national setup well in advanceâ, she explains. âI had a contract lasting four years, exactly like Arjan and Sarina had. As they re-signed, I previously indicated I wasn't sure if I would do the same. I had accepted the notion that after the European Championship I would no longer be involved with the national team.â
The European Championship was an emotional competition as a result. âI recall distinctly, having a conversation with Sarina when I disclosed of my choice and then we said: âThereâs just one dream, what a triumph it would represent if we were to win the European Championship?â In reality, itâs not like dreams come true frequently however, absolutely incredibly, ours came true.â
Dressed in orange, she experiences split allegiances after her time working in England, where she was part of securing consecutive European championships and worked within the manager's team during the Dutch victory at Euro 2017.
âThe national team will always hold a special place in my heart. So, it will be challenging, particularly now knowing that the players will be arriving for national team duty shortly,â she notes. âWhenever the two nations face off, where do my loyalties lie? Right now I'm in Dutch colors, but tomorrow itâs white.â
In a speedboat, you can pivot and accelerate swiftly. In a lean group like this one, it's effortless to accomplish.
The American side was not part of the equation as the organisational wizard concluded that a new chapter was needed, but the opportunity arose perfectly. Cossington began assembling the team and common principles proved essential.
âVirtually from the start we got together we felt immediate synergy,â states Van Ginhoven. âWe were instantly aligned. We have spoken at length on various topics around how you grow the game and what we think is the right way.â
Cossington and Van Ginhoven are not the only figures to uproot themselves from high-profile jobs within European football for a blank sheet of paper across the Atlantic. The Spanish club's female football technical lead, GonzĂĄlez, has been unveiled as the organization's new global sporting director.
âI felt strongly drawn in the deep faith of the power of the womenâs game,â GonzĂĄlez comments. âI'm familiar with Cossington for a long time; when I used to work at Fifa, she was the technical director of England, and decisions like this come naturally when you know you are going to be surrounded by colleagues who drive you.â
The depth of knowledge in their team sets them apart, explains Van Ginhoven, for the collective one of several new multi-club initiatives to launch over the past few years. âThatâs one of our unique selling points. Different approaches are acceptable, however we strongly feel in having that football knowledge on board,â she states. âAll three of us have traveled a path in womenâs football, throughout our careers.â
As outlined on their site, the mission of Bay Collective is to champion and pioneer a forward-thinking and durable system within female football clubs, founded on effective practices for the diverse needs of women in sport. Achieving this, with everyone on the same page, eliminating the need for persuasion for specific initiatives, provides great freedom.
âI liken it to transitioning from a tanker to a speedboat,â remarks Van Ginhoven. âYouâre basically driving in uncharted waters â a common Dutch expression, not sure how it comes across â and you just need to rely on your own knowledge and expertise for making correct choices. Adjusting course and speeding up is possible with a speedboat. In a small team like this, that is simple to achieve.â
GonzĂĄlez adds: âHere, we start with a blank slate to build upon. Personally, our work focuses on impacting football more extensively and that white paper allows you to do any direction you choose, adhering to football's guidelines. This is the appeal of our joint endeavor.â
The aspirations are significant, the management are voicing opinions athletes and supporters want to hear and it will be interesting to observe the evolution of Bay Collective, Bay FC and future additions to the group.
