Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
