The future president of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The vote against the student leader reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.
Disputed Comments
The dispute began after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the death of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while addressing a college in the United States.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.
The president-elect is also said to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to welcome the incident.
Election Results
The vote of confidence was conducted over the recent days, with results announced on this week.
Official notices indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The announcement stated that the president-elect was considered to have resigned in following the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.
In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response categorically refuted that any person appointed by George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect stated that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.
His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Critics have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On recently, Mikey McCoy read out an open letter to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The letter criticized the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent".
The statement warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The society had previously criticized the student's comments after Kirk's death and stated that complaints filed against him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the union in May.
