One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a half-year break that began in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
