Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Title Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Victory
The Thunder star joined the Thunder back in 2019.
The Thunder's star player delivered the decisive baskets deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the Houston Rockets.
Last season's MVP scored 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in double OT, securing the champions a positive start.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.
But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points, was instrumental together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defense," SGA commented of their performance. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, missed attempts, fortune or misfortune. We did enough defensive work to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."
Prior to the game, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their arena, while the players were awarded their title rings.
Oklahoma City defeated the Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the chance to get some payback on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Rockets return to action on the identical day at the Detroit Pistons.
In other action, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was not enough to prevent his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Miami's star scored 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 for the visiting Warriors.
The Lakers were without the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
