‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s path from gurney to goals with Athletic Bilbao
Whenhe initial occasion the Spanish forward featured in England, an teenage representing Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in September 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he took the field in England, against the English side following that, he netted. The third time, against Manchester City six weeks after that, well, he did it once more. When he returned to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he scored again. A spectacular strike, also. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did their duty: they took him off.
“I was furious,” the forward says, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed my contract, I was scoring goals, many stories circulated, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Man United, the typical thing. It’s unclear how true it was, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the training ground, Bilbao, the early training is set to begin; following that, the brief trip to Loiu and another trip to Britain, this time to face Newcastle in the UCL on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. It has become a challenging campaign for the club, due in part to the demands of their participation. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and Dortmund in Europe. Yet, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching the showpiece event by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary surrounded by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Now he is the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
He considered it hard enough just to make the first team and he was right. The son of the one-time rival player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he experienced a torn cruciate, the cut, a drop in category and a return before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to experience the peak of their lives.
“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the first team but every phase you advance through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in six games between his first game and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and my knee gave way.
“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then return home, as a youngster does. In the facility, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All the minor details: execute them.
“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have been in battles repeatedly. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
Game time is essential. The striker moved in tears in that year, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. At Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually the requirement appears in your position, recall is possible. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Especially after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
